Nature is painting for us, day after day, pictures of infinite beauty, if only we have the eyes to see them - John Ruskin (1819-1900)

I took this picture on the top of Cedar Rock Mountain in the Pisgah National Forest. The sun was just rising as morning fog shrouded the valleys below and mountaintops poked through the clouds like islands in an ocean. As I took in the this scene, I enjoyed the present moment and its beauty for what it was. I also imagined all of the chaos, destruction and creation that led to that serene moment, both in my own life and in the Earth's history. Also worth meditating on is that in the future this landscape will be unrecognizable due to the forces of nature and that my life will be different as well, alebiet on a vastly different time scale than the mountain's :)

I hope thatat the end of my class my students will be able to revel in the beauty of nature and the story that the Earth has hidden within it.
